May 23-25, 2013 -- Softballl ISSTs

May 23rd-25th -- Softball ISSTs

FIS finished 5th in the tournament -- a disappointing result.  They lost to Paris in the second game after beating them easily the week before.  To add to the disappointment, the weather was abysmal -- 40 degrees and pouring.  While the pictures below show the girls wearing sweatshirts and jackets as they attempted to play softball, they do not even come close to how miserable it was to play in that weather.  On Friday, the girls played two games back to back in cold rainy weather.  With that said, I think one moment on the field against Cairo American College (yes, Cairo, Eygpt) captured the heart and sportsmanship of the FIS team.  Cairo was killing us -- 16 to 5-- and there was a dispute over a courtesy runner.  As a result, the Cairo player was standing on second base for 5 minutes or so while the officials huddled over the rules.  The Cairo player only had on Under Amour and her sleeveless uniform and it was cold and raining cats and dogs.  The FIS captain, Haley, got her infield to encircle the Cairo player at second base to block the wind and help keep the Cairo player from freezing to death on the field.  While they circled around the player, everyone introduced each other.  At the award ceremony -- Cairo took first -- the two teams sat next to each other and laughed about the game.  The Cairo players thanked the FIS players for taking care of their teammate.  Clearly, while they lost some games, the FIS team showed themselves to be winners!  Here are some pictures from the tournament.  The first one is of the girls huddling around Cairo's player at second base.
