December 27, 2013 -- The Northern Lights Chase
We left Oslo early on Thursday and after a two hour plane ride arrived in Tromso. After dropping off our luggage, we headed out to explore Tromso. Although Tromso is Norway's 7th largest city, our adventures did not take long. Tromso reminded us of a medium size ski town. There was one major difference -- it was pitch black by 2pm. Our first activity began at 6:15 pm. The five of us and about 40 other people boarded buses and took off in search of the Northern Lights and search we did. Earlier in the afternoon, we were told the activity was quite low and it was cloudy so that the odds of seeing anything was slim. By evening, the activity had picked up, but it was still low. Off we headed two hours further north and inland to try and find the Northern Lights. We stopped three times and traveled from 6 pm to 12:30, finally returning home at 1:30 am. We saw more than they predicted, but unfortunately, not nearly what they saw just before Christmas and just as the new year began. No worries, we have all decided we will go back at some point to try again.
